My thesis made me do it...

Take this survey

1.
First thing you wash in the shower?
Uh... Hair I think

2.
What color is your favorite hoodie?
I'm rather fond of my black Tech hoodie and my blue Ford hoodie

3.
Would you kiss the last person you kissed again?
Sure, but I have a question... Does Cleo count?

4. Do you plan outfits?
By plan do you mean I look in my closet and make sure stuff doesn't clash too badly? Yes

5.
How are you feeling RIGHT now?
Slow

6.
Whats the closest thing to you thats red?
The tag on the paint buckets

7.
Do you say aim or a-i-m?
"aim"

8.
Tell me about the last dream you remember having?
No idea.

9.
Did you meet anybody new today?
Nope, haven't left my house.

10.
What are you craving right now?
Nothing.

11.
Do you floss?
yes.

12.
What comes to mind when I say cabbage?
Chinese food.

13.
When was the last time you talked on aim?
It is open right now but the last thing I typed was yesterday.

14.
Are you emotional?
Nope.

15.
Would you dance to the taco song?
huh?

16.
Have you ever counted to 1,000?
Maybe?

17.
Do you bite into your ice cream or just lick it?
Depends on the delivery system of the ice cream. Cone = lick. Sandwich = bite.

18.
Do you like your hair?
Not really, but I don't care really.

19.
Do you like yourself?
Sure.

20.
Have you ever met a celebrity?
Probably but I doubt I cared.

21.
Do you like cottage cheese?
Only good cottage cheese. Bad cottage cheese can be found in the cafeteria.

22.
What are you listening to right now?
The furnace blowing air.

23.
How many countries have you visited?
Many.

24.
Are your parents strict?
Yes...overprotective.

25.
Would you go sky diving?
Sure.

26.
A toast to the end of having housemates (hopefully forever)...

So I managed to escape Houghton and start my new job at Ford...yay!

Now for my last Housemate story....

$HOUSEMATE found out that she had to live in the dorms because MTU considers her a first year student because none of her credits from FU transfered in. So she moves into the dorms.... The last I saw of her was last Wednesday. She left a big mess upstairs and a cat.

She mentioned that eventhough she was going to live in the dorms that she still wanted to keep renting the room upstairs and keep her cat there. So much for being poor huh? Ok, while this isn't ideal it did have the possibility of being workable but would include coming to the house and taking care of the cat everyday and spending time with it. Except this didn't happen. Between Wednesday and Sunday I didn't see Jen at the house once so I took the cat to the humane society just before leaving. While Jen was missing I was the one giving him water and when I left I emptied the nasty litterbox. I had no idea when she would make it back to the house and I didn't want the cat abondoned.

So anyhow there is a cute black kitten at the humane society.

The new girl is going and $HOUSEMATE is smoking

Ugh, so $HOUSEMATE is smoking...in her room. The room thing doesn't bother me so much except that I can smell it down at the bottom of the stairs. She is going to get a talking to when she gets home which is really going to end in 'don't smoke inside.'

On a brighter note, $HOUSEMATE decided it was time for the new girl to go. She gave her until the end of the week (longer than I would have given her) to find a new place and get out. YAY!!!!! If she isn't gone on Sunday I'm putting her shit on the side of the road, rain or shine.

So what pushed $HOUSEMATE over the edge you might ask?? Well this morning $NEWGIRL tried to flush a sanitary napkin down the toilet and it got caught and she couldn't get it out. $HOUSEMATE told her it was her responsibility to get it out and apparently she disagreed. I think it is still caught at the moment. On top of this, she got menstrual fluid all over the toilet and made a mess of the sink. $NEWGIRL also claims she left her watch on the sink last night and it went missing...no idea what that is about. Finally, this morning she was trying to scare $HOUSEMATE's cat away by pounding on the floor. She was pounding so lound that she woke my dogs up on the other side of the house.

I'm glad $HOUSEMATE is kicking her out, saved me the trouble.

Note to $LANDLORD, you don't want this new girl living in your house...

Asshole.

So $HOUSEMATE's kitten got caught in a string that attaches some cat toys to my cat tree. The cat tree is in the dining room and $NEWGIRL was out in the kitchen when this happened and she did nothing about. She just ignored that cat's meows while it's arm was caught and was hanging from one arm and couldn't get free.

She didn't even try to find someone else to help the kitten. I know she could hear it because I was much further away and hear the kitten's cries and went to save him.

If I didn't save him she probably would have left him hanging. What an asshole.

First a little bitching...

Housemate is back again, she was gone 2 weeks this time. She brought a little black male unneutered kitten with her. I really really hope she plans to get it neutered but I won't be here to find out. I hope she understands it will cost more to get her cat neutered than it would cost to adopt a cat from the humane society.

One of housemate's friends got kicked out of Daniel Heights. I have no idea how you could possibly get kicked out because I broke all sorts of rules while I lived in Daniel Heights and never get even close to being kicked out... So Jen is letting her stay here for a few days while she finds a new place. If it is more than a few days I might get really annoyed because she is illogiclly afraid of dogs.

Her fear of dogs has already resulted in Cleo getting free outisde. I let Cleo out of the bedroom into the main house not knowing that both of the front doors were open. $HOUSEMATEFRIEND was sitting in the doorway of the open front door. I yell to tell her not to let Cleo outside and she freeked out and lets Cleo run outside and she runs a few feet away in fear.

I don't really care if you don't like dogs but if you endanger my dogs because of your fear that is a problem. The dogs can't be in the same room as her or she freaks out (and shreaks), rather annoying. She is rediculous. She is also afraid of the little kitten and of the dark. She made Jen leave the hallway light on.

$HOUSEMATE was trying to get her to rent one of the rooms of the house but I really don't think this is the house for her. $HOUSEMATE has a cat, which she doesn't like. $HOUSEMATE wants a dog and $LANDLORDS have two dogs which come to visit whenever they come to visit.

From abpeed:
1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) <strike>Cross out</strike> any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Italicize the stuff that you've eaten and went nuts over and underline the stuff you hated.

1.
Stupid and Hateful

Elections remind me of how stupid and hateful people are. I fear for another four years of hate and stupidity, especially towards women and queer people.

I really should stop reading election coverage before I go insane. I already know how I'm voting. I've known for years how I am going to vote and it hasn't changed.

If I hear one more person cite taxes as their main reason for choosing a candidate my head is going to explode (LJ comments aside). Talk about selling your freedom.

I hate living in Houghton

So I was cutting $WHITEDOG's nails today starting at about 11:15 pm or so and well I cut one too short so it is bleeding. I try corn starch but $WHITEDOG won't stop moving long enough for it to work...

So I think... Ok, go buy some kwik stop, no problem. I go to Walmart, no Kwik stop. So you might be asking why I don't have any kwik stop...because I've looked at Walmart before and they didnt' have any and I haven't found it anywhere else in Houghton either. So look in the first aid section, no styptic poweder, only liquid bandaids...ok try that. I go to look at econo, also no kwik stop or styptic powder so I buy a bandage thing and hope I won't need it...

I go home and try liquid bandaid...no luck. I think it made it worse. I realize I didn't look in the shaving section so I go back to the store and find styptic pencil, yay. Try it, and it just makes it worse and $WHITEDOG won't hold still long enough to help again... Now the whole floor of the hallway is covered in dog blood and there is a bunch of dog blood on me too, great.

So I guess it is time for the bandage, I wrap up his foot. At this point it has been over an hour since the bleeding started, far too long... So I call CC Vet. I hate copper country vet but they are the only ones close by. Well, the message says no vet is available this weekend, I should have expected this, because they suck and are never able to fix anything. So I call the next closest vet...no answer. Finally I call Animal Medical Center in Marquette and someone answers. They page the vet but the vet doesn't call back.

By this point $WHITEDOG has removed the first bandage job, so it is time to try again. His foot has mostly stopped bleeding but is still bleeding a little. I add some corn starch to a telfa pad and wrap it up...

The lady that answered at Animal Medical Center call back to check if the vet has called yet. I tell her no, but I think i have the bleeding undercontrol finally. This is 2 hours after he first started bleeding.

Again, $WHITEDOG removes his bandage so again I reapply it. This time it is covered with a sock to keep it on better...

The whole time $WHITEDOG doesn't care at all. Happy, wagging his tail and wondering why I keep messing with his foot...

White dogs show blood really well...My dog is now covered in blood...

Missing Housemate

My housemate will have been gone for 3 week tomorrow; she was only supposed to be gone one week. I don't think she is coming back. Her facebook status said "$HOUSEMATE is in Grand Rapids looking for a job" yesterday.

She went downstate after her father came up to Houghton to visit her. It was the first time she'd spent any 'quality time' with him in a number of years because $HOUSEMATE didn't get along with her step mother that her father is now divorcing. I hope she isn't planning on dropping out of school or something because that would be no good at all.

Hm... $HOUSEMATE+Cat...

For those who are keeping track I have a new housemate, $HOUSEMATE, who moved in at the beginning of June. My new housemate loves animals, which is a good thing. She wants a dog from the human society up here and has brought in a 'stray' cat she found outside (more to come on this). I have some basic concerns with her owning animals at this point:

Pets are expensive. If all goes well with your pet and you don't have any extra vet costs bills the yearly cost for a dog is around $400. Cats aren't any less expensive. Yes, you can do it for less by buying cheep food and skipping stuff like vaccines but that is bad for your animals. Things don't always go well and most pets have at least one major illness or injury in their lives and this gets expensive. In the second year that I owned $BROWNDOG I spent over $3000 on vet bills so she could walk. I spent $500 on vet bill for $BLACKCAT this year. With in the first 2 weeks of owning $WHITEDOG I had to take him to the vet in Marquette twice cause he got a huge lump on his head. Pets are expensive.

She doesn't have a lot of money. I know this because she told me she was paying only $150/month because she didn't have much money and she has worked out a deal where if she does work around the house worth the cost of her rent then she doesn't have to pay rent. For comparison, I pay $400/month. If she is living on a tight budget and her pets get sick or injured what will she do?

She is in Army ROTC. I'm not entirly sure how the Army ROTC thing works but from the sound of it after she graduates she will have to spend 4 years in the Army. Her plan is to spend that 4 years in the Army National Guard. I'm worried that she will find out that having pets and being in the Army are not things that go together. I'm worried that 3 years from now she is going to leave her pets homeless.

So on to the cat story... There has been this cat that roams the neighborhood. She spends a lot of time around our house and even has tried to come into our house. $HOUSEMATE decided that she was going to 'adopt' this cat and now $HOUSEMATE has this cat. This cat appears to be healthy and in good shape which leads me to believe she isn't a stray and is just someone's cat they let outside. This cat doesn't have any tags or anything on it. So $HOUSEMATE stole a cat from outside. I dont believe cats should be allowed outside so I don't really care that she stole it. The cat was in our yard and had been in our yard many times. If someone left their shovel in our yard day after day I'd probably take their shovel, especially if there wasn't a name on it.

Anyhow, she just lets the cat roam the house. The cat hasn't been to the vet to make sure it isn't sick or anything and I don't want it making my cat sick. She gives that cat my cat's food and lets it eat out of my cat's food and water bowls. This was all Friday night. She told me she was going to take the cat downstate with her and get her check out by a vet down there. Saturday she leaves town for a week and leaves the cat here, ugh. She left the cat just wandering around the house so I locked it in her room where the food/water/litter is.

I don't want to be a jerk or something and let the cat back outside and piss off $HOUSEMATE but I'm worried someone is missing their cat. I'm worried that there is some 5 year old girl who misses this cat a whole lot. My plan is to ask at the humane society if someone has been missing their cat and if they have I'll return it and I'll come up with some story about how I overheard someone talking about a missing cat and blah blah blah.... If no one reports it missing then they probably don't care enough about it for me to worry about. But really, she could have just payed $40 and gotten any cat she wanted from the humane society. If she does ever end up taking the cat to the vet to get checked out like she said she would it is going to cost her more than the adoption fee from the humane society.

She also has a dog picked out at the humane society that she is planning on bringing home after it is awarded to the humane society (it was taken out of an abusive home and the trial is this month).

I just don't know what to do... I want to scream 'HAY YO! YOU DON'T JUST BRING IN CATS TAKE OTHER PEOPLE'S CATS THAT ARE OUTSIDE' but I won't. I also want to tell her 'HAY YOU CAN'T AFFORD A DOG' but again, I bite my toung.

Why must people use 'gay' in a derogatory manner and then get when they get called out on it they proceed to use the word 'gaids?' Especially when that person is married to someone that is a strong supporter of queer issues. How can they think that is going to turn out well?

Toilet Attacks

So today (at 2am) I found out what happens when the toilet in my bathroom clogs... It overflows all over the floor. The only way I got it to stop overflowing was to forge the flood and turn off the water that fills the tank. Yes, I had to step in toilet water to turn off the flow (eew). So at 2am I got to mop the floor. And if overflowing and mopping wasn't bad enough it drips into the basement and all over the laundry room. ugh.

Animal Rescues and Jesus Lovers

So I have a new bitch!

Animals rescues that won't allow people to adopt cats if they want to allow them outside or declaw them are no different than the Jesus lovers that would rather a child be homeless than be adopted by a gay couple. Both disgust me. Especially the ones that would rather euthanize a cat than let it get declawed.

And no, I've never declawed a cat that *I've* owned.

Camera Stuffs List

Ever since I got my DSLR all I've wanted to do is buy camera stuff. It is like a battle everyday not to pull out the credit card and buy another thing. Anyhow here is the current 'want' list:

AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED

AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D

Even more lens

Filters, especially a 67mm B+W polarizing filter

Ball head for my tripod like the Bogen-Manfrotto 322RC2 Horizontal Grip Action Ball Head with RC2 Rapid Connect Plate (3157N)

More speedlights, another SB-600 and an SB-800

The problem with wanting stuff for a camera is it almost always cost more than $100 and often time a *lot* more.

I'm just going to keep dreaming.

Episode #1: The Fixing Adventures of TORH (This Old Rental House)

For people that don't know I rent a house in the fine college town of Houghton. To be fair, I have to say this is one of the better rental houses in Houghton.

Like many houses in Houghton, this house is around 100 years old and was built during the copper mining boom (which peaked in 1916). Originally the miners were houses in what could best be described as tents but eventually to attract and retain employees the mining companies built 'elaborate' houses with electricity and running water. These houses are what I refer to as 'mining houses.'

The house isn't falling apart like many 'mining houses' in Houghton are. My landlord isn't a jerk like many landlords I've had or heard about, he really is a good guy. The problem is $LANDLORD lives 500 miles away and is buried deep little projects at TORH.

This has resulted in $FIANCE and I fixing stuff around the house. We learned about bleeding radiators when we arrived back from break with a 50 degree house and with this knowledge we fixed the heat. $FIANCE fixed the dripping faucet in the kitchen. $FIANCE and I fixed the shower that dumped hot water out of the valve stem when it was turned on.

So, yeah, we are all around house fixers now.

Admit it, you don't like Clinton because you are sexist...

Hillary Clinton running for President has done one major thing for me. It has made me realize how sexist people really are. It is men and women that are sexist and many don't even know how sexist they are.

People don't like her and don't have a non-sexist reason to not like her. I'll be honest, if people can't give me a reason other than "she gives me a bad feeling" or some crap like that, I assume they are in denial about being sexist and I chalk them up on the sexist list. You choose your boy/girlfriend on the 'feeling' they give you, not your president.

$FIANCE is in trouble because he said "I don't want her to be president because I don't think other countries will respect us with a woman president." At least he wasn't hiding it...

On with someone that is hiding it... Today in the wonderful world of IRC I mentioned that Rudy supports same sex civil unions (more so than any other Rep. candidate). $FROSHY was like "Not marriage?" I pointed out that Obama didn't support marriage. I pointed out that Clinton didn't support marriage either and the response I got from $FROSHY directly said that he would not vote for her. So I ask him "what is your sexist reason." He goes on to deny that he has a sexist reason but instead claims that he doesn't like her 'policies' on a lot of things. When questions which policies he didn't like he didn't have an answer.

I'm still not sure what to do with my one friend who claimed they didn't want her president because they didn't want the white house to be controlled for over 24 years by only 2 families.

Ok, for those of you out there that generally prefer to vote democratic but have exclaimed "Anyone but Hillary" what is your reason? If you don't like her and don't have a reason... No going and searching for reasons on wikipedia that you didn't even know about and were not used in your initial dislike of her.

I have nothing against Hillary. She isn't my number one choice but I'd surely vote for her if she got the democratic nomination. My reason for liking others better is she doesn't support same sex marriage (as mentioned above) and she doesn't support single payer universal health care.

I believe the governments recognition of committed relationships should be the same for two people of the same sex and two people of different sex. Everyone should be able to be recognized by the government as married or everyone should be able to be recognized by the government as in a civil union and marriage exists outside the government (this second option is the best IMO).

I believe in single payer universal health care for basic care. I believe that single payer universal health care doesn't prevent there from being a capitalistic health care in the same market. People will always want more than they need and the capitalistic system will cater to that desire. Example, you kid gets a large cut on their face, the basic care will cover basic stitches that will probably leave a nasty scar. You could pay more and 'upgrade' to having the stitches done by a plastic surgeon. Companies no longer need to provide basic health insurance as perk, but instead can provide some upgrades to the basic insurance as a perk.

Poor kitty...

So my cat Julie, the one that has had an on going UTI that just isn't going away. She is on her 4th antibiotic, was also given an antifungal and some dietary supplements.

The vet told me that the antifungal can make her anorexic if she doesn't eat it with food...and surprise, surprise... she isn't eating very well right now. I've been careful to also give it with food but now I can get her to eat tuna and ham but not her special prescription diet c/d food. She won't even eat the soft c/d food.

If this wasn't bad enough last night when I went down to the basement to give Julie her medicine she was on the floor and looked like she was having a seizure. Once that ended she looked generally confused and wasn't walking very well with her back legs. She also was a bit scared with her tail all poofed up. She was right up against the second dryer and I believe it must have started while she was up on the dryer and she fell off.

Now I have her confined to one of Cleo's large dog crates with a litter box, food, water, and towels. I don't want her doing any more falling. The vet isn't going to be open again until Monday. I've stopped giving her medicine (antibiotics have been associated with seizures at least in humans). Hopefully she'll be fine until Monday when I can take her back to the vet. I *hope* this was all caused by her medicine and will go away now I've stopped giving it to her.

Good thing I don't have morning classes. Maybe I should put a webcam on her to see if she is ok when I can't watch her.

More CCHS fun

So today again I went to CCHS. The dogs are sooo wonderful.

I took a picture of Jake for Jon today and took Jake for a walk. Jake was a good boy, he pulled a little but overall was a good on his walk. Jake's info sheet says he's an Alaskan husky.

I also walked little Mistletoe. She was a sweet little girl, didn't even pull or anything. Mistletoe now has her update info sheet that says she is a lab cane corso mix. She is going to be a big (and beautiful) girl someday.
